As a longstanding reader it is rare that I have a bone to pick with FT Weekend, but I am afraid I must take issue with the title of Simon Kuper’s column, “World View” (FT Magazine, August 6).

In my humble opinion this could be more accurately titled “European View”. I say this as a proud global Aussie who, while now based in Melbourne, spent 40 years as an expat.

I am an admirer of Kuper’s musings. But to my knowledge, apart from South Africa, he has rarely written about the Antipodes, nor possibly has he travelled there.

Certainly many of us Melburnians would — Covid lockdowns notwithstanding — contest that Melbourne, not Madrid, is “the world champion of liveability”.
